Punjab Kings won the game against Mumbai Indians on 23rd April by 9 wickets. Sent to bat first, Mumbai Indians only managed 131 runs in their inning. However, Punjab chased it down quite comfortably when 2 overs were spare.
This was 3rd loss for mumbai Indians this season. It has also exposed how fragile their lower middle order is on slow tracks.
Mumbai Indians failed to use Powerplay
Punjab Kings won the toss and invited Mumbai Indians to bat first. Quinton De Cock was caught out in the second over, after trying to hit Hooda in the Pavillion.
Mumbai Indians promoted Ishan Kishan to maintain the left-right combination, but he failed miserably. He managed to score 6 runs off 17 balls. As a result, Mumbai made a very low score in the powerplay scoring just 21 runs on the loss of 2 wickets.
Later in the mid-inning, Rohit and Surya played magnificently during this period. The duo added 79 runs in the 9 overs they played. Unfortunately, Mumbai Indians lost their set batsmen in death overs, leaving the job to flourish for Mumbai’s lower order.
Mumbai Indians’ lower order has been failing consistently in this slow pitch of chepauk and in this game, they didn’t do anything different. Mumbai needed the late flourish which never came. The outcome of this was they give an under-par target to Punjab kings. Pollard and Pandya’s brothers continued their horrible form.
Despite Rohit Sharma’s brilliant knock, Mumbai Indians managed to put 131 runs on board.
Punjab Kings looked solid throughout the inning
Punjab scored 45 runs in the powerplay without any loss. They lost Mayank on 53 and thereafter KL Rahul and Chris gayle took responsibility and finished the match for Punjab.
Mumbai Indians tried hard for comaback with their spinners but duo played them out and attack fast bowlers.
KL Rahul’s classy 60 was made up of 3 fours and 3 sixes, while Chris gayle scores a solid 43 off 35 balls.
KL Rahul was awarded with Player of the match award his spectacular performance.
